6 Picturesque Movie locations in Malta

6 of the Most Scenic Malta Movie Locations

Malta has recently been put on the map with regards to movie locations. We’re not talking of low-budget movies but rather award-winning classics. The following are only a couple of the most popular filming locations in Malta. Here are the locations which Choice Holidays believes are the most spectacular.

  • Game of Thrones

The world-renowned tv-series, Game of Thrones, features Malta strongly in it's first season - alongside Cyprus, Iceland and Spain.  Next time you’re watching a rerun of the show, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Mdina Gate.

  • Agora

Agora brought Gods to Malta. Magazine Street, in Mdina, served as an Egyptian market throughout the historical drama.

  • World War Z

Brad Pitt’s World War Z was a groundbreaker in the industry. Malta served as a body for the Jerusalem-based scenes in the apocalyptic thriller. If you’ve been to Malta, you’ll easily recognise our beautiful capital!

  • Midnight Express

Billy Hayes is a prisoner in Midnight Express but Malta is a shining star. Malta served as a souk during the filming of Midnight Express.

  • Kon-Tiki

Valletta’s fisheries area is highlighted in the award winning Kon-Tiki. The maritime movie is partly shot in Malta, all for good reason.

3. Fort Ricasoli

  • Gladiator

Gladiator is an iconic movie in which all Maltese locals are proud to be featured. Malta features in many scenes, representing Rome.

  • Assassin's Creed

Malta served as the perfect embodiment of an old Spanish city in Assassin’s Creed. Fort Ricasoli was turned over and adapted in order to suit the film crew’s need.

4. Comino

  • The Count of Monte Cristo

Saint Mary’s Tower in Comino served as a backdrop for the classic Count of Monte Cristo. The movie shot scenes all around the archipelago of Malta.

  • Helen of Troy

Brad Pitt has a pattern going on for Helen of Troy is another movie he starred in based in Malta. We’re predicting an influx of Pitt fans to visit.

  • Popeye

If you’ve taken interest in Malta before, you’ll know Popeye Village is an iconic touristic spot on the island. Popeye Village was a movie set built to host Robin Williams’ Popeye. The movie set was never taken down and still serves as an attraction till this very day.

6. Gozo

  • The Da Vinci Code

Several scenes for The Da Vinci Code were shot in Gozo but only a short clip made it to screening as certain blasphemous scenes were cut out of the director’s cut.

  • Clash of the Titans

The recently fallen Azure Window served as a backdrop for Clash of the Titans. The same window and Dwejra was also featured in Game of Thrones, in fact it was the scene of the wedding of the Khal Drogo with Khaleesi among many other productions. The lost movie icon is thoroughly missed.
